It is with extreme regret that we are writing to inform you that SAM’S CLUB is discontinuing its warehouse club business in Canada.
We would like to begin this letter by thanking you for having become a SAM’S CLUB member – you were a valued supporter of our business, and it was our privilege to serve you. We like to think of our members as more than just customers, and we trust that this was evident to you every time that you walked into a SAM’S CLUB in Canada. We also note that your SAM’S CLUB membership will continue to be valid until its expiry at all SAM’S CLUB locations outside Canada (including at over 600 locations in the United States), and we hope to continue to see you in our Clubs in the U.S and elsewhere.
We understand that for many of our members, the discontinuance of our business may raise a number of questions. As this letter will make clear, we have been very careful to ensure that, where possible, members’ needs will continue to be addressed during this period of transition.
When is the last day of regular operation?
All SAM’S CLUB Canada locations will continue to remain open to all members until 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2009. March 1 is the last day of regular operation.
What happens after March 1?
Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2009 and ending at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2009, Business Members will have an exclusive opportunity to take advantage of clearance pricing on select and remaining SAM’S CLUB merchandise. During these days, the Clubs will be open to Business Members only.
Beginning on March 9, 2009 7 a.m., for a limited time, the Clubs will be opened to the general public. All merchandise will be available while supplies last only.
What happens to my SAM’S CLUB membership and membership information?
Your membership will expire on its stated expiry date, and will not be renewed. No action is required on your part. As described above, your membership can continue to be used until its expiry at all SAM’S CLUB locations outside of Canada.
Your membership information will be retained by Wal-Mart Canada Corp., the owner and operator of SAM’S CLUB Canada, in accordance with the terms and conditions of your SAM’S CLUB Membership. If you do not wish to have your membership information retained by Wal-Mart, you are entitled at any time to contact us to request that this information be provided to you or destroyed. You may do this by contacting our Member Service line at the 1-800 number listed below.
If you did not previously request that SAM’S CLUB exclude you from mailing lists for offers by SAM’S CLUB or its affiliated companies (including Wal-Mart), Wal-Mart may from time to time use your membership information to send you offers and promotions from Wal-Mart, from Wal-Mart affiliates or from carefully selected Wal-Mart vendors. You are entitled at any time to notify Wal-Mart that you do not wish to receive any further communications.
Any request relating to your personal information, including any request to access your membership record or to opt out of receiving future communications, can be made by contacting Wal-Mart at 1940 Argentia Road, Mississauga, Ontario, L5N 1P9, Attention: Vice President and General Counsel.
What happens to special orders?
Effective February 27, SAM’S CLUB Canada locations will no longer be taking special orders. With respect to special orders that have already been placed:
party tray and cake orders will be available to be picked up at your Club at any time during business hours prior to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2009. Please ensure that all such orders are picked up prior to that time.
orders for optical products, photos, furniture and tires will require that you contact your Club directly to make arrangements for pick-up. Such orders shall be available for pick-up at any time during business hours prior to 7 p.m. on March 15, 2009, and accordingly we would ask that you contact your Club to arrange for pick-up at your earliest convenience. What happens to SAM’S CLUB vision centre information?
For your convenience, all prescription information and patient records from your SAM’S CLUB vision centre visits will be transferred to Wal-Mart. This information will be available for you on future visits to the optical centre at the Wal-Mart store nearest to your SAM’S CLUB location. If you do not wish to have this information retained by Wal-Mart, you are entitled at any time to contact us to request that this information be provided to you or destroyed. You may do this by contacting our Member Service line at the 1-800 number listed below.

So many places are closing, so many more people laid off, kind of sad to read this article. But at least Sam's has notified the Members and they can make arrangements to pick up their final purchases.
