Don't know how these deal posting thing works but my GF just bought this notebook from BestBuy at $1199.99 3 days ago, tomorrow, with price match, we're going to get it down to $979.99! Sweet deal!

We originally wanted a MacBook cuz of the webcam and ease of use, but the price premium + lacking specs on the MacBook vs this HP Pavilion DV2020CA convinced us otherwise, now with an extra $220 off, the HP Pavilion DC2020CA feels like a steal!

I too was looking at this unit, as someone was offering one for sale in another thread. The reviews on it seem mixed, so I am unsure.

This is a great message thread on a Notebook forum where they compare the DV2020 to similar models.

DV2020 Discussion

Here are the other reviews I found (spelling & grammar errors are not mine).

Exactly why should anyone get the dv2020ca (Canadian model)?
Compaq V3030CA: $1199.99, Turion X2 TL-52 processor, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD, lightscribe DVD-RW

HP dv2020CA: $1199.99, Turion X2 TL-50 processor, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, non-lightscribe DVD-RW

Now, unless HP posted its information wrong regarding the V3030CA, I don't see why anyone would get the dv2020CA. Specs-wise, the Compaq has the HP beat in about every category. Could anyone please tell me the reasons of getting the dv2020CA instead?

My cousin bought a DV2020CA. It was spec'd out with a AMD Truion but it seems the trackpad on these DV20** are crap. It jumps all over the place even after adjusting the synaptics settings. Also doesnt feel right. I have a Dell and LG laptop to compare it too and there is a huge difference. Keyboard is nice and keys are positioned well. LOTS of useless software bundled with it. I spent more time uninstalling crap then I did installing there was so much junk

Good laptop with small design issues, 9/7/2006
Reviewer: Haihong H, Mississauga, Ontario
Had this one a week ago, so far so good, although there are two small design issues I think. The first is the power cord. It uses a North America standard socket. It may have trouble if you bring it to Europe or China. The other is the remote. According to the user guide, you can store the remote in the storage space. However, it is very very diffecult to have it out. It cost me 10 minutes to use a self-adhisive tap to take it out. Overall, I rate it 4.

Not only is HP a reliable company, but smart and creative. Powerful, stylish and just the complete package. The screen is bright and crisp, it has touch sensitive media controls, you can run multiple programs without crashing any of them, from a dvd burner to a card reader, to a built in 1.3mp web cam. It does the job...and some.

Not bad one, but has some disadvantages, 9/7/2006
Reviewer: Kirill S, Toronto
I likes it, but want to share some negs1. It's too hot from the bottom - no way to keep in on knees without additional layer.2. Touch pad works pretty bad - losing focus and jumping all around the screen3. Function buttons too sensetive - it could be pressed by incident when my fingers passing near by4. USB posts too sticky - hard to put cable jack inside5. DVD drive is too noisy6. It takes 10GB of HDD space for sytem restore - it makes actual HDD space is just about 67 Gigs7. Memory takes to slots 512 + 512 - therefore in order to upgrade it you must throw it away..8 . Screen could be open only on about 120 degree - not 180 like most laptops..

good laptop, 8/25/2006

crazyyyyy laptop. its beautiful. theres blue lights all over it. camera makes it really unique. good laptop if u wanna show it off to people. the features are really good. the only thing im not sure though is the processer. although it is dual core and 64-bit, the speed is only 1.6ghz. For now it is handling applications pretty fast but i dont know if it can handle it in the future. the fan isnt even that loud, unless you leave it on your lap and it tends to overheat, but thats with any laptop. would greatly recommend this product. it comes with everything u need for a affordable price. much better than the intel core duo laptops.

had this since the first week of august. excellent laptop. battery doesnt heat up that fast and even with a 6 cell i get good time just under 3 hours provided im not doing anything too taxing like watching streaming video. although ive purchased a 12 cell online. i'd recommend checking if extra battery is available before buying any laptop. incidentally hp canada is no longer selling the 12 cell for the dv 2000 series..now its just another 6 cell.. the duo processor is so so...i was told to leave it alone and it was smart enough to assign different applications...but it gets slow so i think i might have to tamper with that...sound quality is alright. wireless is excellent. no bluetooth. 80 gb hard drive is sufficient enough for me i think. the 2040 has abt 40 gb more AND lightscribe...but i didnt need either of those and it'll be a bit easier for me to let go of this one in a few years time. camera is quite convenient with built in mic...but at 1.3 mp not the best quality. quickplay with its light up keys is convenient as well. love the overall look. keys are nice. not sure abt the mice buttons but then i just double click the pad so i dont use them much.haven't started at university with this yet but i think it'll work out really well. it's not the lightest laptop in the market but it IS light. lighter than most books i have anyway p looking forward to the looks since it is a pretty laptop as well. would still recommend checking it out in store before making any decisions...it took me a whole week to decide

Very nice laptop, 8/16/2006

This is a very nice laptop. HP has did a great job in making this think look good. Its very glossy and you see finger prints easly. Thats probably the only flaw. The built in webcam is awesom and dose teh job for simle video chat. This laptop is very light and protabel and with lots of power to boot. Very good laptop

which company are you price matching?
is this coming on sale today or something?

i'm a geek @ BB and i install/repair this particular one all the time
things i agree with:
touchpad does feel kinda wonky, but works none the less
litescribe is useless and the extra 40gbs doesn't justify the 2040's price

things i don't agree with:
any software issues are for noobs (unless it's some hardware/software conflict), you should all know that a clean install with hp's drivers on xp pro or mce is the way to go for optimal performance, not to mention the speed you gain from various registry tweaks etc. obviously they all come with trial crapware - ALL laptops do, that should not count again this laptop
no problems with USB (i use a stick for personalized settings on every machine)
dvd drive is not noisy, at least it's the same between many others in the store
the remote does take a little getting used to, but i've played with so many on different hp models that not one single one has screwed up on me (the insert/release mechanism)
i've stress tested several and they weren't hot to me at all
64-bit means absolutely nothing in ur machine, unless you've formatted to xp 64bit or an OS that is 64 bit
i doubt you can really feel the difference from the dual core unless you're doing intensive things like encoding video or using photoshop
i wouldn't put any different brand of memory into my laptop, not even the exact same model manufactured at a different time. too many things can go wrong that no one can predict, so i'd sell the sticks if i had to

Thanks for the great analysis, dragonone! You should be selling instead of "geeking", unless you love the Bug, heh! Being a techie myself, I recognize that your points are valid and well presented.

One point that does merit discussion is the 64-bit issue. While the Bopper definitely agrees with your sentiment that a 64-bit unit is not effective unless you are leveraging its power with the appropriate O/S, being able to accommodate Vista after its launch might be a consideration for me and others.

AMDs do tend to run hotter and have less battery life as a result, but there has been new PowerSaver technology incorporated into some of the newer units.

What unit is out there that you might recommend to someone on a reasonable budget, dragonone?

OOps... i'll be price matching with Futureshop this afternoon.

I'm not too worried about the touchpad.. i'll get a mini mouse.. touchpads are useless to begin with. =)

Thanks for the comparison Blooper, and thx for the analysis Dragon.. this was actually the one the guys at BestBuy recommended... and they tried to force the Product Service Plan down my throat.

"Do you know what comes with your service plan?"

"Excuse me?"* - me

"Oh, Do you not know that there's a service plan? No one helped you?"

"I'm NOT getting the service plan"*

"But...(blah blah blah)" "NO"* "You sure?....(blah blah blah)" "NO"* "BUt...(blah blah blah) " "NOOO"*

psshhht.. nice try

Stupid Service plan people, thats why I actually have stopped buying s#it like this in store becuase they just dont give up. Last time they tried this with me, I told them to save their breath, I wasnt interested, and he started to ramble on anyway, and I turned and walked out. IDIOTS! They make like a great commision off that service plan (at least at FS they do). A guy who I used to work with worked there at one time, and said thats why they push it so hard, becuase they get a hefty cut out of it.

actually the sales and myself don't make money off the PSPs
it's actually the managers and upper positions that make comission and the amount of PSPs they sell is only PART of their criteria for a bonus

the 2020 IS a gd choice at this price range, esp. for looks and the webcam
i like dell and their 6400
i remember when they were on sale it was core duo, 80gb, 2gb ram, dvd burner, x1300 for definitely under 1300
but for under 1gs this is a gd deal (now that you mentioned it)

finally i found it:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pr...10076940&catid=

wonder how long this sale's going on, my frnd wants to price match it too

Thanks for the link DragonOne! Yeah for $979.99, with those specs, I'm mainly attracted to its webcam.. remote, dual-core, dvd burner.. etc... i do enough travelling to know that i'm too lazy to take out and plug in my webcam into the USB on my laptop. and my sempron just ain't cutting it.. I'm too cheap to buy a tv and go out to the movies... so the remote is perfect. and i can't begin to tell you how much of a headache i have with my notebook's lack of a DVD burner. My work requires quite a bit of editting.. so all my RAW files are taking over my HDD and it's not playing friendly with my CD Burner.. but at least i have an external HDD. So for what its worth.. if i had the money.. i'd upgrade my notebook as well! for now.. i'll enjoy my girl's notebook.. =D
