The Great Potato Giveaway

Saturday, September 26, 2009, 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.

(Take Manning Freeway North to 195th Avenue, turn right and follow the signs!)   The Edmonton Potato Growers and the Greater Edmonton Alliance have teamed up to bring Edmontonians to their own "Local Harvest" on some of our city's most spectacular farmland.  

Harvest 50 lbs of FREE POTATOES per person. THERE ARE MORE THAN 100,000 POUNDS AVAILABLE AT NORBEST FARMS!

 

Come roll up your sleeves and feel the dirt in your fingers – no tools or bags needed! We will supply you with a re‐useable bag for your spuds.

 

Experience and learn about the significant contribution Edmonton's farms and farming families make to the city.

 

Learn about GEA’s campaign to preserve high yield farmland within urban development and create a strong local food economy.

 

Day to include:   - Growing Potatoes 101‐ Learn from the experts on how to grow your own potatoes on your own city lot. 10:00 a.m.‐ 11:00 a.m.

 

- Education and Visioning‐ This event is about raising awareness of the amount of food this land produces locally, providing an update on the Municipal Development Plan, as well as getting your input on how it should be used in the future.. 12:00 p.m.‐1:00 p.m.

 

- Kuhlmans Market Gardens and Greenhouses Fundraiser for GEA‐ After harvesting your own local potatoes visit Kuhlmans Greenhouses and buy the rest of your vegetables and support the work of the Greater Edmonton Alliance.

I don't live in the province, but this is a GREAT idea! I just read an article re:food waste, and this is a great way to make sure that food that is not "asthetically appealing" or not already harvested doesn't go to waste!

Great post, too bad I don't live there. Potatoes still aren't that cheap yet and fresh potatoes from the ground taste mighty fine (used to grow my own so I know, lol)!
