Not sure if anyone has used this service but if I lived in ON or QC i would certainly try as it's half the price of what I pay now. I believe the price is based on a one year term.

Whatever you do, DON'T GO FOR THIS DEAL! Read the threads on this company. They are a total scam. You've been warned. If you do go for this, change your credit card immediately afterwards. They charged me TWICE, two years in a row for a service I had already cancelled. Beware. My advice? Run the other way.

I've been using them for the last 2 yrs along with their VOIP service. Excellent deal, good service. Just be aware that this price is for the first year only then AUTOMATICALLY jumps to about $40/month unless you notify them to cancel several months before the end of the first year. This is THE best deal for unlimited bandwidth. I have nothing bad to say except they use Bell's network which gets throttled during peak times. I am currently trying to figure out ssh tunneling to get around the throttling. Even at the higher, non-introductory price they are the best deal for unlimited downloads... just double check your credit card statement since they seem to have sloppy accounting practices.

I guarantee that if you take this deal, you will regret it. Those are my last words on it. You have been warned!
"they seem to have sloppy accounting practices." ???? They are outright crooks.
Mods: I would strongly suggest to delete this thread. The good members of PN don't know what they are in for if they sign up with these crooks.
Freya, don't take this personally. I don't go off on rants too often but this company is definitely a company to stay away from. Don't anyone say you weren't warned.

When I wrote that they appeared to have sloppy accounting practices it was based on another person's comments and not from my own experience. Acanac has served me well for two years. Do not worry about being double billed, I'm sure that that's an anomaly and easily corrected with one phone call to Acanac or your credit card company. Being a DSL provider they are not as speedy as cable but they are for sure the best value and their service has been exemplary. Acanac seems to be a major advertiser for PN as their banner appears everywhere on the site. I was paying almost $100/ month for an unlimited business Videotron account until I discovered Acanac. They are much slower but much cheaper also...and very reliable with zero downtime since I signed on. Sincerely, RSole CEO Acanac, lol

My sister has been with them for over 2 years, and hasn't had any major issues at all. Any downtime has been related to Bell network issues (confirmed with friends in the same area who are with bell), and not acanac themselves.
The promo price is for the first year only.. And the second year it goes up to $34.95/month +tax.
Even though after the first year, there are cheaper alternatives, she decided to stick with them for (1 more year at least).
Be careful since if you have used a CC to pay for your first year, they will simply charge you a full year at $34.95/month+tx * 12 months, as soon as your first year is finished (ie: auto renew at non-promo pricing). I really hate the 1 year prepay after the first year.. I think this is unnecessary.
If you don't want to use your CC, I believe since you prepay for a year, you can easily just send them a cheque for the fist year's payment.
I am using vianet.ca and have no issues either (they charge my CC on a monthly basis (not yearly), and have had no problems. I like that they use a corporate supernews account for offering USENET newsgroups to thier customers. And they offer 100MB of Web space.
However if you want the best 3rd party DSL, then don't waste your time, just go to teksavvy.com. They have the best customer service by far. Most knowledgeable staff, and a very different corporate mentality which values thier customers (quite rare nowadays unfortunately).
If you want to take advantage of the acanac promo cheap pricing, then sign up with Acanac.. Prepay using a cheque for the first year. then 1 month before the expiry of the first year, call, cancel, and switch to teksavvy.

I can't use these guys anyways as I am not in Ontario or Quebec so I wasn't sure about the service. I think this is like many other companies; some people have good experiences and some don't. Just the way it goes....

I'm okay with leaving this thread here. I heard a few bad things about Acanaca but this thread helps remind me how bad they are...
This thread is useful cause it lets readers know the opinions of others... if its removed, they might just sign up without knowing what issues others have suffered.

Hmm, Toronto2001, I read your previous thread which also explained why
the Acanac ad is always staring me in the face though they have
maltreated members here. I guess I have been one of the lucky ones with them. When my intro year is up I will shop around. Thanks for the warning. Caveat emptor indeed.

I agree Urban, this way people can read the thread and then decide for themselves what they want to do. Does anyone know of a cheaper internet service though? I Know where I live there aren't any available but sometimes companies leak into where I live a year or two later.

Good point, Urban.
Freya, this is the cheapest you can get. I don't have an argument with the first year service. The problem is only with the billing AFTER the first year. If you change your credit card, as in renew it or just ask for a new one with a different expiry date, you'll be fine. Cancel your first year a month or two before it ends, set up with Teksavvy (strongly recommended) and then acanac can't rebill you for the expensive second year. They don't send an email when they renew your account, even though they say they do. They just go ahead and bill you for the full second year. In my case, they did this TWO YEARS IN A ROW, even though I had cancelled the service at the end of the first year. God, this brings back some bad memories! Check out Teksavvy Freya, and see if they are in your area.
